The science behind what we see!^TM
In the Oct/Nov 2007 issue of Modern Bride Magazine, Beauty Director, Mary Clark underwent microdermabrasion treatments by NYC Dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD. Dr. Wechsler explained that the pores of the skin are cone-shaped, and exfoliation removes the surface layer which is the widest area of the pore, over time the pore appears smaller.

How does it work?^TM
The pores of the skin open as Epidermx II^TM gently chips away at the hard, rigid outer layer of skin. Removal of the top layers of dead skin and bacteria laden debris that clog pores allows for deeper penetration of nutrients within the formulation. Think on this for a moment. If you use a product containing Propylene Glycol, are you comfortable working anti-freeze deep into open skin tissue? Do you want to massage clogging oils such as Isopropyl, Myristyl Myristate and Octyl Palmitate deep within skin tissues to clog fresh pores? Phenoxyethanol, Paraffin, artificial color and fragrance irritate newly opened skin; Mineral oil, PEG, Carbomer, Carbopol, Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl and Propyl Parabens are petroleum based synthetic compounds that can be toxic, and Parabens have a weak estrogenic effect. Some compounds, such as Hydroxymethylgycinates, release Formaldehyde. Fillers lack the natural scientific benefits of the crystal and are unable to perform! Remember, you are opening up skin pores and depositing the ingredients in the formulation deep within skin tissue.^TM

True Corundum Crystal is a creation of nature and in fact is a Sapphire! When it contains Chromium, it is a Ruby. When properly mined and fused at over 2000'F, Corundum Crystal is an inert, insoluble compound. In the US it is used to remove surface dental cavities! The majority of Corundum Crystal in products is made from Bauxite, an ore of Aluminum Oxide (Al₂ O₃ ), and far too soft to affect hard keratinized cells. True Corundum Crystal has a natural blocky, hexagonal shape; this attribute, along with its natural hardness, which on the MoHS scale is surpassed only by the diamond, make it the perfect compound for microdermabrasion.

Powders, including the popular mineral make-up bases, can deposit in the pores of the skin where it combines with dirt and sebum. This debris can become impacted in the pore. Corundum Crystal is not only able to remove dead skin cells and surface debris, it is also able to catch bits of impacted debris, which over time is brought to the surface. You can see this process happen on your skin. Mini-microdermabrasion^TM is a simple effective solution, it allows oxygen in, and keeps debris out of the pore. Removal of this debris also allows for deeper penetration of ingredients. Just one of many reasons why the quality of ingredients in a product makes such a difference! Silicone-based products are derived from plastic. It should make sense that a plastic residue may prevent oxygen from entering a pore.

How does EpidermxII^TM work with acne, rosacea and skin conditions?^TM
The original developer of Epidermx^TM, a RN, made this product for her daughter, a model in New York City over 8 years ago! The surprise came when her own hormonal acne, and the other kids adolescent acne, cleared! Although there are many types of acneic conditions, the most common occurrence is from clogged pores. Powders, including the popular mineral make-up bases, can deposit in the pores of the skin where it combines with dirt and sebum. This debris can become impacted in the pore. Most acne causing bacteria are anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria thrive in oxygen, starved areas and feed on fatty acids in the sebum. Corundum Crystal is not only able to remove dead skin cells and surface debris, it is also able to catch bits of impacted debris, which over time is brought to the surface. Skin conditions are often related to skin health. It is interesting that many Dermatologists believe Rosacea is caused by a mite, Demodex Folliculorum, which inhabits the sebaceous gland. People with rosacea seem to have a higher growth of this mite, whose excrement causes irritation, infection and inflammation. Since 2000, many who suffer with Rosacea, Psoriasis and other skin conditions have reported remarkable results.

What are Silicones?
The skin is a living organ. Some of its functions include protection, sensation, fluid regulation, and the elimination of wastes and toxins. Most skin care products contain silicone-bases. Silicones are plastic-based polymers used as emollients and thickeners. There are hundreds: Dimethicone, Carbomer and Cyclopentasiloxane (also known as D5, a type of Dry Cleaning fluid) to name a few. Upon initial appearance, the skin looks smooth as the plastic-based polymers fill in the gaps of minor skin imperfections. Health Canada (Ministry of Health, Canada) lists silicones and siloxanes on their March 2007 Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. Companies selling products with these ingredients must submit skin sensitivity testing and meet data requirements 90 days pre-sale.

Many scientists believe silicones may act like a plastic bag, which may restrict nutrient absorption and impair the functions of the skin as an organ. The skin may then be fooled into thinking it is hydrated. They believe at the cellular level a different picture may emerge. The skin can no longer breathe. Unable to eliminate cellular wastes and toxins, these toxins are re-absorbed. This toxic build-up increases stress, which causes cellular inflammation and cell damage. Cells become congested, dehydrated and bloated with waste that begins to stagnate. Cellular function begins to fail, and supporting skin tissues collapse, which creates changes in blood vessels, and in the lipid, or fat matrix of the skin.
