Sea Salt you say? ^TM
Sea Salt is used in "Thalassotherapy" (from the Greek word for the sea, thalasso), or the medical use of seawater. Fans include Joan Collins and Jennifer Lopez.₁

It may have begun with Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, seeing the healing effect seawater had on the hands of fishermen, but Thalassotherapy today is a multi-billion dollar industry. Thalassotherapy is believed to have an affect on the pores of the skin, allowing phytonutrients from seawater to be absorbed into the skin, and toxins to be eliminated.₂

Triple Lavender Face Foam^TM contains a host of yummy ingredients with a long historical use of healing effects on the skin. Not one, but a blend of three types of lavender, which according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, human clinical studies have shown lavender to be both an antibacterial and antiviral agent with benefits to the skin from conditions such as fungal infections, closed wounds and injuries, eczema and acne. There are ongoing studies as to the use of lavender, and tea tree oil, with young male children; therefore, if you are pregnant, or breast-feeding, we recommend you ask your health care professional before use.₃ Lavender is commonly used in baby products.

No harmful Sodium or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfates here, Triple Lavender Face Foam^TM is loaded with with natural based compounds to produce a thick, luscious foam such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine, a combination of fatty acids from coconut oils and betaine from sugar beets. In biology betaines have a protective affect on cells against against external and internal stress. Betaines allow for the retention of water to prevent dehydration and protect cellular function.₄

Antioxidants from Aloe Vera, Dandelion, Pineapple and Papaya promote protection from free radical damage.

Pineapple is a also natural source of the enzyme bromelain, which is believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect and is able to break down dead proteins.

Papaya also contains a phytonutrient known to be both an antioxidant and an anti-infammatant, cryptoxanthin is a carotenoid that is also found in mango and orange rind. Related to beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin is converted into Vitamin A (retinol). Medical research has found an inverse association between B-cryptoxanthin and lung cancer risk, with several studies that suggest B-cryptoxanthin could act as a chemopreventative agent against lung cancer.₅

Sea Salt, hmm, but I thought salt is alkaline, I am confused! ^TM
Believe us, we know! According to Steve Herman, adjunct professor of the Masters in Cosmetic Science Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the combination of an acid and a base creates a neutralization reaction that produces a salt and water. NaCl is a salt, and is essential to life. Salts can also be a part of other raw materials, and surfactants, or wetting agents that lower surface tension. Salt plays a role in the viscosity, or the thickness, of a product. Salt is a crystal formed by sodium and chloride molecules, and is usually in the shape of a cube. In the world of product formulation, when salt crystals come in contact with moisture the result is "caking", which affects product flow. This occurs when the salt dissolves and the crystals adhere to each other. Product caking can controlled by the addition of natural, or synthetic compounds in the formulation that alter the shape of the crystal.

The ocean contains about 3.5% salts, of which NaCl, or Sodium Chloride is about 2.6%. The Dead Sea has a salt concentration of about 27%. Sea Salt contains minerals such as magnesium, calcium, bromine and potassium, and each mineral has a different pH level. So, just like soil, sea salt has a pH level that can vary due to temperature change, and organisms and plants growing in the environment.₆ Infact, in the science of chemical oceanography, due to the variances of seawater pH, an artificial seawater had to be created to establish a solution for testing with a constant pH level.₇
Triple Lavender Face Foam^TM is also a blend, the formulation as a result is non-alkaline, the majority of cleansers are alkaline, the effects of which are discussed below.* This is an example of product development at the molecular level. One reason why we recommend misting the skin before product application, NaturDerm^TM knows that results occur from the molecular level.

What are Silicones?^TM
The skin is a living organ. Some of its functions include protection, sensation, fluid regulation, and the elimination of wastes and toxins. The majority of all global skin care products contain silicone-bases. Silicones are plastic-based polymers used as emollients and thickeners. There are hundreds: Dimethicone, Carbomer and Cyclopentasiloxane (also known as D5, a type of Dry Cleaning fluid) to name a few. Upon initial appearance, the skin looks smooth as the plastic-based polymers fill in the gaps of minor skin imperfections. Health Canada (Ministry of Health, Canada) lists silicones and siloxanes on their March 2007 Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. Companies selling products with these ingredients must submit skin sensitivity testing and meet data requirements 90 days pre-sale.^TM

Other common skin care compounds can be combined with silicones. Carbomer, a common thickener, is also a trademarked name for a synthetic polymer of acrylic acid. Acrylic Acid is produced from propene and is a petro-chemical by-product. Acrylic Acid is a severe skin irritant and is corrosive. PEG derivatives are polymers of ethylene glycol, related to propylene glycol, or "anti-freeze". Propylene, also called propene, is a petrochemical by-product; the main hazards involve respiratory symptoms. Propylene is an asphyxiant.^TM

Many scientists believe silicones may act like a plastic bag, which may restrict nutrient absorption and impair the functions of the skin as an organ. The skin may then be fooled into thinking it is hydrated. They believe at the cellular level a different picture may emerge. The skin can no longer breathe. Unable to eliminate cellular wastes and toxins, these toxins are re-absorbed. This toxic build-up increases stress, which causes cellular inflammation and cell damage. Cells become congested, dehydrated and bloated with waste that begins to stagnate. Cellular function begins to fail, which creates changes in blood vessels, and in the lipid, or fat matrix of the skin; supporting skin tissues collapse.^TM

To make matters worse, our skin is covered with salt, which is released when we sweat. Salt is alkaline and alters the protective pH mantle of the skin. Bacterial growth increases. Skin health is influenced by the acid mantle, which acts as a natural protective barrier. The acid mantle neutralizes the chemical effects from bacteria and contaminants that are mainly alkaline in nature. Most cleansers are alkaline, and require the use of a toner to correct the pH of the skin. NaturDerm^TM products do not need a toner; all products including cleansers, are pH correct to promote acid mantle health.^TM

Poor skin health creates a cyclical state of dehydration, congestion and toxic build-up that is visible. Puffy, dull, dehydrated skin with increased signs of aging, send us running! To compensate, we apply more product that may be alkaline, or change to another product that contains a silicone-base, which perpetuates the conditions of dehydration, congestion, toxic build-up and an unhealthy state of skin function.^TM
